WHAT YOU’LL BE LEARNING:

Day one will introduce the “how to’s” for making a series of plates for accurate registration, color and image development. We will use Vellum paper templates (soft ground and chalk transfer), as well as registration image offsets on the press for print accuracy. These building blocks are essential for plate development and a means by which creativity is not excluded from the process of image development. Edition printing will follow the next weekend (not necessarily a sequence).

Additionally: material information on etching color(s) and mixing, paper choices and preparation to assure accuracy and consistency. Hand inking demonstration and ready to print/edition preparedness.

Saturday, March 5th ~ 11:00 am to 3:00 pm

Production printmaking for *multiple originals and consistency. This workshop is intended to raise the bar on potential quality and consistency issues that come with edition multiple plate color etchings. Major topics will be preparation (paper, ink, and registration), printing, and conservation of final work.  Side information on steel facing for color work and curatorial work for portfolio and gallery presentation will be discussed. You will need to have plate(s) for color work ready to go.

*Mulitple originals is a term used to describe hand made printed editions, each individual print being made from a matrix of plates, stones or screens and crafted with great consistency such that the intention of the artist remains as exacting in presentation as is humanly possible.

INTRODUCING MASTER PRINTMAKER LARRY HAMLIN

As a professional printmaker I have always been interested in craft and visual expression. The mastery of craft is only useful if it is a means to create one’s vision, and to see that desired vision come to life. There are many paths to achieving one’s creative goals, for me that has been thru the printmaking and the drawing process. It is a passion that is renewed with each enterprise into the creative/decision making process. Every artistic creation asks different things of the artist. Printmaking is the most creative and versatile method I have ever known. It offers endless possibilities and asks new questions at every turn. It is exciting, and brutally honest. For this I am thankful.

I earned my M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute and was trained as a master printer at Crown Point Press in San Francisco. While at C.P.P. I worked with numerous Artists publishing fine art prints for Galleries, Museums and private collections.  Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud, Judy Pfaff, John Cage, Al Held are a few of the artist that I worked with while at Crown Point Press. I went on to publishing other artist under my own press label, Mad Dog Press, and continued to make my own prints and drawings, while teaching full time at the University of Illinois.  A recent move to Salt Lake City has me seeking to re-establish my press and engage in the active arts community here. I am thrilled to be invited and able to offer workshops at Saltgrass Press in multiple plate color printing.  This is an opportunity to demonstrate techniques for building a multiple plate image and a day of “how to” print an edition of color work (multiple originals).  My work and that of the artist who I have worked with have been collected by museums and private collection nationally and internationally.

Muscle memory, also known as motor learning, is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition. When a movement is repeated over time, a long-term muscle memory is created for that task; eventually allowing it to be performed without conscious effort. This process decreases the need for attention and creates maximum efficiency within the motor and memory systems.
