Background: A steamroller event is rooted in the printing of large-scale woodblocks carved by local artists and community members. We bring the steamroller and print pre-carved blocks throughout the day on Tyvek paper. For this event, we will be printing 40” diameter mandala sets. Each set is comprised of three parts: a center, an inner ring and an exterior ring. Participants can choose which portion they would like to carve. On the day of the event, we will combine the individual parts to create a completed mandala print. We will mix and match the blocks all day long until we have exhausted the possibilities.
Why a mandala shape? In the past, we have printed individual large scale woodblocks. During these quarantine times, we thought printing a symbol that is commonly found across cultures could help bring us back together as a community. Mandalas have historically been used as a means to orient (re-orient) oneself through a ritual or a devotional act. Maybe such a collaborative creative act might help to rebuild a sense of community? Why not?!
Subject matter? Each individual had creative control of their section of the mandala. Printmakers historically have had a long history as a democratic inclusive creative community. All voices, experiences and points of view were welcome.
