An Introduction to the Drum-leaf™ Binding With Timothy C. Ely
In 1995, while looking at a very rare and wonderful book in Special Collections at the University of Utah Marriott Library, Tim Ely was moved by prints, circular in form and not interfered with by the binding in any way. “There were several ways to achieve this. Thinking about this for a while, I felt that I wanted a method of binding that would work for single-sided imagery like my etchings, photographs or collage work. I wanted it elegant and streamlined.
In short, I devised a method called The Drum-leaf ™ binding. This binding method has several variations. The variants will be examined in this workshop.”
“It is always wonderful to work in a print shop and an honor to offer this one at Saltgrass.”
We will divide the workshop into two parts. The first part, under Stefanie Dykes’ steady gaze, will be the preparation of imagery which will make up our final project. On Saturday, April 27th ~ 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saltgrass Printmakers will dedicate the shop to workshop attendees. Students can choose to work independently at the shop or attend the scheduled print demonstrations and then spend the rest of the afternoon printing.
In the second phase, May 3, 4 & 5th Tim Ely will introduce the process of making a fundamental Drum-leaf ™ binding. This will be our prototype and will establish the learning curve. We will then make a refined version using the printed material made in part one.
see this method as very large in scope and so my intention is to get as much information about it and its mutation forms as we can. As with making a printing plate or piece of jewelry, we can refine and elaborate to great effect, resulting in compelling and stunning books.
